Quality Basics, SPC, process capability, and Lean Six Sigma fundamentals
What you'll learn
Use frequency plots and box plots to identify common distribution shapes and interpret what they reveal
Calculate and interpret key statistics, probability distributions, and process capability indices (Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk) to assess process performance
Plan data collection and sampling strategies to reduce bias and ensure representative process data
Conduct a Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) using Gauge R&R to evaluate repeatability, reproducibility, and measurement system accuracy
Build and interpret control charts (I-MR, Xbar-R, p, np, c, u) to distinguish common from special cause variation and keep processes in controlRequirements
Basic knowledge of statistics and arithmetic is needed. Everything else is explained.Description
Quality does not happen by accident , it is built through statistical thinking, disciplined data collection, and the right tools applied at the right time. This course takes you from the foundational principles of quality management all the way through to the statistical methods that keep modern manufacturing and process industries running reliably.
You will start with the pioneers who shaped the quality movement (Shewhart, Deming, Juran, Crosby, and Ishikawa) and the methodologies that grew out of their work. From there, you will build a practical statistical foundation: understanding variation, working with probability distributions, and using the normal distribution to predict process yield.
The course then moves into the full data lifecycle used in quality work. You will learn how to plan and execute reliable data collection, apply sound sampling strategies to avoid bias, and run a Measurement Systems Analysis (Gauge R&R) to confirm your data can be trusted in the first place. From there, you will use graphical analysis to understand what your data is really showing you.
The back half of the course covers process capability (Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk) and Statistical Process Control, where you will learn to build and interpret control charts, apply the eight tests for special causes, and respond correctly when a process signals a problem.
Who this course is for
This course is for students and professionals looking to build or reinforce their knowledge of statistical methods for quality, including quality, manufacturing, and process engineers wanting a practical grounding in SPC, process capability, and control charts.Homepage
