The story of this outlaw couple from Dallas held the American nation spellbound in the midst of the Great Depression. Screaming newspaper headlines and breathless radio reports followed the Barrow Gang for two years on the run. Bonnie & Clyde's exploits were so enthralling that on any given day reporters placed them in four or five states at once. Everyone, it seemed, wanted a brush with the country's most famous outlaws.
Their crime spree was an ongoing tale filled with narrow escapes. It was also filled with brutal and cavalier murders. Police officers were the gang's favorite targets. Clyde Barrow and his associates gunned down nine officers of the law, despite that, many impoverished people across the United States held them up as folk heroes.
What factors can produce such a band of sociopaths? What would lead otherwise law-abiding citizens to root them on?
This course examines the answers to those questions with a look at the poverty that was rampant among tenant farmers even prior to the Depression. It also delves into the Texas prison system, which routinely transformed young petty criminals into hard-boiled ex-convicts.
