Discriminative listening is the ability that one can distinguish differences in sound, in interpersonal communication, this ability can aid us notice changes in tone, pace, pitch, pauses and vocal effort. Let clearly understand that noticing those differences is useful, but interpreting them requires context and clarification. in fact, this form of listening improves with practice, but not in conversation which returns almost no feedback. It is interesting to note that most listening guidance operates at the level of meaning. Do not interrupt. Reflect back what you hear. Ask open questions. All good advice, and it assures something rarely examined: that you accurately received the signal in the first place. Practicing by lsolating environmental sounds is key: practice closing your eyes for one minute and identifying every unique background noise such as traffic, a hum of an appliance, distant voices to sharpen auditory focus. Sometimes in real life even mechanics listen to a car engine's distinct rattles or hums to pinpoint a failing part.
One of the things that discriminative listening is key about is practice active attention, this clearly means mentally prepare yourself to track sudden shifts in a speakers's volume, pitch, or cadence. There are some key benefits of discriminative listening that has enhance communication such as improving emotional awareness, this allows you to notice underlying feelings- such as starin, sadness, or excitement- by turning into changes in a speaker's voice pitch and pace.
